Mount Fuji — commonly referred to simply as Fuji — is an active stratovolcano located in the central part of Honshu Island, about 90 km southwest of Tokyo. It is the highest point in Japan, rising 3,776 meters (12,389 ft). The volcano is famous for its nearly perfect conical shape, with its peak often covered in snow. Mount Fuji is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fuji is one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks, attracting more than 200,000 climbers each year. The area offers well-developed tourist infrastructure, including shops, cafés, rest areas, and rescue centers. The best time to climb the mountain is in July and August, when the summit is free of snow.

Mount Fuji is considered sacred in Japan and is a traditional pilgrimage site for both Buddhists and Shinto practitioners. The mountain is privately owned by the Shinto Great Shrine of Hongu Sengen. At its summit are a Shinto shrine, a small post office, and a meteorological station. From the top of Mount Fuji, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Honshu Island, the Pacific Ocean, and Tokyo.
