Sapporo is a major city in the northwest of Hokkaido, the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture, and one of Japan’s largest urban centers. The city covers about 1,121 km² and is home to roughly 1.96 million people. It serves as the cultural and economic hub of Hokkaido and is also a popular destination for travelers from around the world.

Sapporo gained global recognition after hosting the 1972 Winter Olympics and is especially famous for the annual Sapporo Snow Festival, when streets and parks are transformed by hundreds of snow and ice sculptures. The festival takes place in early February and lasts about a week. The area surrounding the city is known for its hot springs and numerous ski resorts, which attract visitors throughout the year.
