Aktau is a port city and the administrative center of the Mangystau region in southwestern Kazakhstan. The city has an estimated population of about 200,000 people as of 2024, covering an area of approximately 27 square kilometers. Aktau is uniquely located in the middle of a desert, about 8 meters below sea level, making it one of the few cities worldwide situated below sea level.

Aktau was founded in the mid-20th century after rich uranium deposits were discovered in the region. Originally called Guryev-20, it was later renamed Aktau, then changed to Shevchenko in honor of the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. In 1973, Aktau became home to the world’s first water desalination reactor, marking an important milestone for the city’s development. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it reclaimed its historic name and grew into a major center for Kazakhstan’s oil and gas industry.

The city has a dry desert climate with long, hot summers and moderately cold, dry winters. Summer temperatures frequently reach 95°F (35°C) or higher, while average winter temperatures hover around 30°F (-1°C). Precipitation is scarce year-round, which explains the predominance of desert landscapes around the city.

Aktau attracts tourists with its unique Soviet-era architecture, a beautiful waterfront along the Caspian Sea, scenic sandy and rocky beaches with crystal-clear waters, and access to the region’s natural wonders. The city center features landmarks such as the Eternal Flame memorial with the Victory Alley, the Taras Shevchenko monument, and a model of the MiG-21 aircraft.
