Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー) is an impressive telecommunications and observation tower located in Tokyo’s Sumida district. With a total height of 634 meters, it is the tallest tower in the world and one of the tallest freestanding structures on the planet. Construction began in the late 2000s, was completed in February 2012, and the tower officially opened to the public on May 22, 2012. The project was designed by the architectural firm Nikken Sekkei, and Obayashi Corporation served as the main contractor.

Tokyo Skytree’s architecture blends neo-futuristic design with elements of traditional Japanese aesthetics. In the evening, the tower comes to life with LED illumination presented in two styles—Iki (symbolizing sophistication) and Miyabi (representing elegance), creating a mesmerizing display of light. Surrounding the tower is the Tokyo Skytree Town complex, which includes the large commercial area Tokyo Solamachi, an aquarium, a planetarium, numerous shops, and restaurants. Since its opening, the tower has become one of Tokyo’s major tourist attractions, drawing tens of millions of visitors in its first years.

Tokyo Skytree’s primary technical purpose is to provide digital TV and radio broadcasting for the Kanto region, especially in Tokyo’s dense urban environment. However, its role extends far beyond broadcasting: it serves as a major hub of culture, tourism, and entertainment, standing as a symbol of modern Japan and an architectural marvel of the 21st century. The tower features two observation decks—Tembo Deck (about 350 m) and Tembo Galleria (about 450 m)—offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city. One of the decks includes a glass floor, allowing visitors to look straight down for an exhilarating experience.
