Osaka is a major seaport, the administrative center of Osaka Prefecture, and one of Japan’s leading economic hubs. It is located on the shore of Osaka Bay in the Seto Inland Sea, in the central part of Honshu Island, about 500 km (310 miles) west of Tokyo. The city covers an area of 223 km² (86 sq mi) and has a population of more than 2.6 million people, making it Japan’s third-largest city after Tokyo and Yokohama. Osaka is also considered the third-safest city in the world, following Tokyo and Singapore.

The city has a humid subtropical climate with very hot, rainy summers and mild winters. Most rainfall occurs between May and September, while winters are relatively dry, with precipitation falling mainly as rain. Osaka’s top attractions include the world-famous Universal Studios Japan theme park and Osaka Castle, surrounded by the scenic Osaka Castle Park (Osakajō Kōen). The city is served by two airports: Kansai International Airport and Osaka International Airport (Itami), which primarily handles domestic flights.
