About Obihiro
Obihiro is the vibrant capital of the vast Tokachi Plain — Hokkaido’s agricultural powerhouse and one of Japan’s top food-producing regions. Known as the “city of horses, potatoes, and butadon”, it offers a perfect mix of wide-open countryside and surprisingly sophisticated urban life. While Sapporo feels like a big city and Furano is all about lavender, Obihiro is where real Hokkaido life happens: endless fields of wheat, beans, and sugar beets, world-class dairy farms, and some of the freshest pork bowl (butadon) you’ll ever taste.
Founded in 1883 as a pioneer settlement, Obihiro grew into a clean, green, and incredibly liveable city of wide boulevards and low-rise buildings. Locals are famously warm and proud of their food culture — Tokachi produces the milk, cheese, potatoes, and beans that supply much of Japan. It’s also the home of Ban’ei horse racing — the only place in the world where massive draft horses pull one-ton sleds. Obihiro is perfect for those who want authentic rural Japan without sacrificing comfort.

- Spring (Apr–May) – 5–18 °C, cherry blossoms and potato planting season
- Summer (Jun–Aug) – warm 20–28 °C, low humidity, ideal for cycling and balloon rides
