About Volzhsky
Volzhsky is the second-largest city in the Volgograd Region after Volgograd, forming part of the Volgograd metropolitan area. The city has a population of about 321,500 people and covers an area of 150 kmยฒ. It is located on the left banks of the Akhtuba and Volga rivers, just 20 km northeast of central Volgograd.
Founded in 1951 as a settlement for workers building the Volzhskaya Hydroelectric Power Station (HPP), Volzhsky was granted city status in 1954. Today, it is connected to Volgograd by the dam of the Volzhskaya HPP and by a road bridge across the Volga River.
Volzhsky has grown into one of the largest industrial centers of the Lower Volga region, especially known for its chemical industry. Major enterprises include the Volzhsky Organic Synthesis Plant, Nitrogen-Oxygen Plant, Tire Plant, and Synthetic Rubber Plant, as well as machinery, metalworking, and metallurgy facilities.
