Brief Information About Grandvalira
Grandvalira is the largest ski resort in Andorra and the entire Pyrenees region, stretching across the eastern part of the principality between France and Spain. The resort was formed in 2003 through the merger of several independent ski areas and today includes seven fully interconnected sectors: Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo, Encamp, and Peretol. The resort’s elevation ranges from 5,610 to 8,660 feet (1,710 to 2,640 meters) above sea level, ensuring reliable snow cover throughout the season.
The total length of prepared slopes at Grandvalira is 130–134 miles (210–215 km), serviced by 73 modern lifts. The resort offers 139 runs of all difficulty levels:
- 17% green for beginners
- 39% blue for intermediate skiers
- 32% red for advanced skiers
- 13% black for experts
The longest run stretches 5.6 miles (9 km), and the snowmaking system covers 78 miles (126 km) of slopes, guaranteeing quality coverage regardless of weather.
The ski season at Grandvalira traditionally begins in the first week of December and continues until mid-April. Thanks to the northern exposure of most slopes and the extensive snowmaking system, snow conditions remain reliable throughout the winter months.
Climate at Grandvalira
Grandvalira’s climate is typical of the high-altitude Pyrenees region, with cold, snowy winters and mild, sunny summers. Winter temperatures are moderate for this altitude: daytime temperatures typically hover around 32–37°F (0 to 3°C), while nighttime temperatures drop to 21°F (-6°C). The coldest month is January, when daytime temperatures average about 34°F (1°C) and nighttime temperatures can reach 21°F (-6°C).
Annual snowfall at Grandvalira is approximately 56–60 inches (143–151 cm). The most snow falls in December — an average of 21–23 inches (54–58 cm) — followed by January and February, with 11–15 inches (27–38 cm) per month. The summer months, June through August, offer comfortable daytime temperatures of around 64–68°F (18–20°C), creating ideal conditions for hiking, mountain biking, and scenic gondola rides.
Attractions of Grandvalira
Grandvalira is not only about alpine skiing but also offers many unique attractions that make the vacation unforgettable for visitors of all ages. Each of the resort’s seven sectors has its own features and highlights.
Pas de la Casa, the highest sector on the French border, boasts the only illuminated slope in Grandvalira for night skiing and the liveliest après-ski atmosphere with bars and nightlife. It is also home to excellent freeride zones near the Pic Blanc lift.
Grau Roig is considered the best place for freeride and off-piste skiing. It is home to the only FIS-certified downhill ski track in the Pyrenees, which regularly hosts World Cup events.
Soldeu and El Tarter offer excellent conditions for family vacations. El Tarter features Andorra’s largest snowpark, Snowpark El Tarter, with the longest line of modules in the Pyrenees, as well as the famous black run Àliga, which has hosted World Cup finals.
For families with children, the Canillo sector is of particular interest, with the Mon(t) Magic Family Park, featuring the longest zip-line in the Pyrenees and the Màgic Gliss toboggan run, 1,821 feet (555 meters) long.
In the Encamp sector, visitors can take the Funicamp — one of the longest cable cars in Europe (3.7 miles / 6 km of ascent) — as well as visit the Casa Cristo ethnographic museum and the 12th-century Romanesque church of Sant Romà de les Bons.
In addition to skiing, resort guests can enjoy snowshoeing through picturesque valleys, dog sledding (mushing), snowmobile tours, and even helicopter flights to untouched powder zones (heliskiing) for experienced skiers. And thanks to Andorra’s duty-free status, shopping here is a special pleasure, with prices lower than in neighboring Spain and France.
