Rising to approximately 3,329 meters (10,922 feet) above sea level, Mount Etna is not only the highest volcano in Europe but also one of the most active in the world. It is located in the northeastern part of Sicily, near the cities of Catania and Messina. Catania sits at the base of the southeastern slope of the volcano, while Messina is located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of Etna’s crater.
This stratovolcano has erupted for hundreds of thousands of years, shaping the surrounding landscape with its lava flows and ash deposits. Frequent eruptions have created a unique and diverse ecosystem around its slopes. The lower parts of the volcano are covered with fertile soil that supports lush vineyards, gardens, and forests. The summit is often snow-covered during the winter months, creating a breathtaking landscape in Eastern Sicily.
Mount Etna was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. The volcano’s constant activity provides scientists with invaluable scientific data, while also attracting countless tourists from around the world who are eager to explore its slopes and witness its eruptions firsthand.
