Tapaz is a 1st-class municipality in the province of Capiz, located in the central part of Panay Island in the heart of the Philippine archipelago. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 54,423. Covering roughly 517 km²—about 20% of the province’s total area—Tapaz is one of the largest municipalities in Capiz.
Historically, Tapaz has an agriculture-based economy. Local residents are primarily engaged in farming, fishing, and livestock raising. The municipality includes extensive forested and mountainous areas used for both resource extraction and agricultural activities. The official municipal website highlights development programs focused on agriculture, tourism, and social infrastructure.
Tapaz celebrates several local festivals and religious events, including the Patabang Festival (September, honoring the town’s patron saint), the Sirinadya Festival (January, in honor of Santo Niño), and various barangay festivities such as the Tinuom Festival in San Nicolas. The cultural traditions of the Panay-Bukidnon people are preserved here, including the epic chanting known as suguidanon.
Tapaz is accessible by road from other parts of Capiz Province and neighboring provinces on Panay Island. However, infrastructure in mountainous and remote areas remains partially limited. The nearest major island is located about 55 km away.
