Hakodate Station is the main railway station in Hakodate, a city located at the southwestern tip of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. The station originally opened on December 10, 1902, and its current building has been in service since June 21, 2003. It is operated by JR Hokkaido, the primary railway company serving the island.

Hakodate is one of Hokkaido’s major cities, covering an area of 677.95 km² and home to roughly 270,000 residents. The city sits along the Tsugaru Strait on the Kameda Peninsula at the southernmost part of the island. Hakodate also features a seaport and Hakodate Airport, which provides air connections to various regions across Japan.
