The square represents a remarkable example of 19th-century urban design and includes the Alexandrinsky Theatre, the Russian National Library, and the Catherine Garden. Today, Ostrovsky Square serves as one of Saint Petersburg’s cultural hubs, hosting theater premieres, literary events, and city celebrations.
Catherine Garden occupies most of Ostrovsky Square and is a historic park established in the 19th century. It was laid out in the 1820s according to a design by architect Carlo Rossi as part of the creation of the square’s architectural ensemble. The garden is named after Empress Catherine II, whose monument stands at its center. It is enclosed by an elegant wrought-iron fence decorated with the empress’s monograms. The park features a variety of trees and shrubs, including elms, oaks, willows, chestnuts, maples, and lindens.
The Alexandrinsky Theatre, situated on the southern side of Ostrovsky Square, is one of the oldest theaters in Russia. It was founded in 1756 and named in honor of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, the wife of Emperor Nicholas I. The current theater building was designed by architect Carlo Rossi and opened in 1832. Built in the Empire style, it serves as the centerpiece of Ostrovsky Square’s architectural composition. The theater has played a crucial role in the development of Russian performing arts, premiering many classical works that have shaped the nation’s cultural heritage.
