Srednyaya Akhtuba is a small settlement and the administrative center of Sredneakhtubinsky District in the Volgograd Region of Russia. It is incorporated as the municipal formation “Urban Settlement of Srednyaya Akhtuba.” The settlement lies on the right bank of the Akhtuba River (a left distributary of the Volga) on the semi-arid Caspian Lowland, about 19 km southeast of the city of Volzhsky and 31 km northeast of Volgograd. The population of the settlement is about 14,300. A major regional highway connecting Astrakhan, Volzhsky, Engels, and Samara passes through the area.
The climate here is sharply continental and dry, with hot, arid summers and cold winters. The average temperature in January, the coldest month, is around −5.1 °C (22.8 °F), while in July it averages +25.9 °C (78.6 °F). Annual precipitation is about 385 mm (15.2 in), with the wettest month being May (41 mm / 1.6 in) and the driest August (24 mm / 0.9 in). The settlement is attractive to visitors due to its proximity to the Volga-Akhtuba Floodplain Natural Park, an important ecological zone of the region.
