Onega is a small town in northern Russia and the administrative center of the Onega District in the Arkhangelsk Region. It sits in the northwestern part of the region, on the eastern shore of the Onega Bay, where the Onega River flows into the White Sea. The town is about 206 km (128 miles) southwest of Arkhangelsk and roughly 163 km (101 miles) from Severodvinsk. Surrounded by dense forests and scenic waterways, Onega offers a naturally picturesque setting.
The history of Onega spans several centuries. It was officially granted town status in 1780 and developed as an important port and trade hub in northern Russia. Its favorable location by the White Sea encouraged the growth of shipbuilding and maritime trade. During the Soviet era, Onega became a major center for the timber industry, which remains central to its economy today. Logging, wood processing, fishing, and maritime transport are key sectors, with the local port playing a strategic role in cargo shipping.
Onega attracts visitors with both its history and natural beauty. Notable landmarks include the Onega Local History Museum and the Transfiguration Cathedral, an architectural monument of the 19th century. The surrounding area is rich in forests, rivers, and lakes, creating ideal conditions for eco-tourism, fishing, and outdoor recreation.
The town’s climate is moderately cold, with long winters and short, cool summers. Average temperatures are around −12°C (10°F) in January and +15°C (59°F) in July. Due to the influence of Arctic air masses, the weather changes frequently, and the area receives significant precipitation throughout the year.
