Onega is a small town and the administrative center of the Onezhsky District in the Arkhangelsk Region. It is located in the northwestern part of the region, on the eastern shore of Onega Bay, where the Onega River flows into the White Sea—about 206 km (128 miles) southwest of Arkhangelsk and 163 km (101 miles) from Severodvinsk by road. The town is surrounded by dense forests and numerous lakes, giving the area a unique natural charm.
Onega was granted town status in 1780. Throughout its history, it developed as an important port and trade hub in northern Russia. Its proximity to the White Sea fostered the growth of shipbuilding and maritime trade. During the Soviet era, Onega became a major center of the timber industry, which strongly shaped its economy. To this day, the city’s economy is primarily based on logging and wood processing, while fishing and maritime transport also play a significant role thanks to its seaport.
The town attracts visitors with its rich history and scenic landscapes. Notable landmarks include the Onega Museum of Local History and the Transfiguration Cathedral, a 19th-century architectural monument. The surrounding area, with its forests, lakes, and rivers, offers excellent opportunities for ecotourism, fishing, and outdoor recreation.
Onega has a moderately cold climate with long winters and short, cool summers. Average temperatures are around -12°C (10°F) in January and +15°C (59°F) in July. The city is often influenced by Arctic air masses, resulting in frequent weather changes and significant precipitation throughout the year.
