Mamayev Kurgan is a memorial complex and burial site dedicated to the defenders of Stalingrad during the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942–1943. The kurgan itself is a high hill on the right bank of the Volga River in the center of modern Volgograd, offering a panoramic view of the city. From September 1942 to January 1943, this hill was the site of some of the fiercest fighting against Nazi Germany. According to one version, the name Mamayev Kurgan dates back to the time of the Golden Horde, when watch posts of Mamai, a commander of the Horde, were stationed on the hill.

On October 15, 1967, the memorial complex To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad was solemnly opened at the top of the hill. The central symbol of the memorial is the statue The Motherland Calls—a colossal figure of a woman with a raised arm holding a sword. This monument dominates the ensemble and is visible from many parts of the city. The complex also includes mass graves, museums, and architectural compositions, making it one of the largest World War II memorials in Russia. The remains of more than 34,500 defenders of Stalingrad who died during the city’s defense and liberation are interred in both individual and collective graves within the memorial grounds.
