The City Rampart is a historic fortification from the 12th to 16th centuries, located in the heart of Dmitrov. This preserved earthen structure encircles the territory of the ancient Dmitrov Kremlin and is recognized as a federal cultural heritage site, forming part of the Dmitrov Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve. The rampart, oval in shape, stretches approximately 960–980 meters in length and reaches heights of up to 15 meters. Its best-preserved sections are along the northern and eastern sides of the Kremlin, while the southern part includes a restored moat segment.

Construction of the rampart began in the 12th century under Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, coinciding with Dmitrov’s founding. During the late Middle Ages, the fortification was actively expanded and reinforced, serving a key defensive role within the Kremlin system. Oak walls with towers and gateways once lined the rampart’s crest, with the Yegoryevskaya and Nikolskaya towers being the most prominent. A water-filled moat surrounded the rampart, crossed by drawbridges. The original wooden fortifications were destroyed in 1610 during the Time of Troubles and were not rebuilt. The Nikolskaya Gate was reconstructed in 2004, though the structure has since faced damage from natural elements and undergone further restoration.

Archaeological excavations around the Kremlin and rampart have uncovered remains of Slavic-era dwellings, household items, blacksmith workshops, and other structures. These digs, conducted throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, including major efforts in the 1930s and 1990s, have enriched the site’s historical significance. From the rampart’s summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of central Dmitrov, including landmarks like the Assumption Cathedral, Sovetskaya Square, and the Elizabethan Church. The surrounding area features observation platforms, museums, and walking paths.
