Kirov Square is the main square of Irkutsk, located between Lenin Street and Sukhe-Bator Street in the historic center of the city, within the Right-Bank District. Important landmarks surround the square, including the Spasskaya Church, the Epiphany Cathedral, the Irkutsk City Administration building, and the Eternal Flame memorial. From the square begins the road leading to the lower embankment of the Angara River.
Kirov Square dates back to around 1670 and was originally known as Kremlin Square, marking the birthplace of modern Irkutsk. For centuries it served as a hub of trade, fairs, and entertainment for residents and visitors alike. Today, Kirov Square remains a vibrant gathering place, hosting city festivals, public celebrations, and major events. Each winter, Irkutsk’s main Christmas tree is set up here, and the square becomes the center of New Year’s festivities.
