Lenin Square is the central and historically significant square of Velsk, located right in the heart of the city. It serves as the main hub of public life, hosting city events, festivals, and cultural activities that attract both residents and visitors. The square is surrounded by historic buildings and greenery, creating a pleasant atmosphere for walking and relaxation.
Originally known as the Trading Square, it was renamed Freedom Square following the revolutionary events of the early 20th century, and later received its current name, Lenin Square. After a devastating fire in 1885, Velsk was actively rebuilt with stone buildings. The central square became home to trading rows, hosting the annual Afanasiev Fair.
One of the key landmarks on the square is the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral, built in Russian architectural style between 1898 and 1913 by the Vologda provincial architect N.S. Pukhlov. In the 1930s, the cathedral was converted into the House of Socialist Culture, resulting in the loss of some architectural elements, including its domes and porch. Today, the building houses the District Cultural Center. The square also features the Sobolev Merchant Mansion, now the Velsk Local History Museum, where visitors can learn about the city’s and region’s history.
