Lobnya is a city located 15 km north of Moscow (from the MKAD) or 25 km from Savyolovsky Railway Station, situated on the southeastern slope of the Smolensk-Moscow Upland along the Alba and Lobenka Rivers. Near the city lies Sheremetyevo International Airport. The city’s name derives from the Lobenka River, possibly linked to the Baltic word “loba” or “lobas,” meaning “valley” or “riverbed.” With a population of 81,143 as of 2024 and an area of approximately 31.56 km², Lobnya is a relatively small but dynamic city in the Moscow Region.

Granted city status in 1961 by merging several villages, Lobnya’s history dates back over 6,000 years, evidenced by archaeological findings. During World War II, fierce battles took place here, particularly near Krasnaya Polyana, now part of the city, where German forces came closest to Moscow. The liberation of Krasnaya Polyana marked a turning point in the Battle of Moscow. Today, Lobnya is a growing hub, benefiting from its proximity to Moscow and Sheremetyevo Airport, with ongoing development of residential complexes, transportation, and infrastructure.

The webcam captures Batareynaya Street and its intersection with Bukinskoye Highway. In the foreground, Victory Square features the Moscow Defense Memorial, commemorating the heroic defense of Moscow in 1941. In November 1941, German forces advanced toward Lobnya, aiming for Moscow, but were halted by Soviet troops, notably the 2nd Moscow Rifle Division. The “Zenitka” memorial complex, featuring an anti-aircraft gun on a pedestal, stands as a symbol of this final defensive line.
