Senate Square is one of the city’s main squares, located in the historic heart of Russia’s Northern Capital, near the Admiralty, in the western part of Alexander Garden, along Alexandrovskaya Embankment on the left bank of the Neva River. Established in 1704 during the construction of the Admiralty, it is one of the city’s oldest squares. Originally named Isaac Square, it was renamed Senate Square in 1763 when the Senate moved into the Senate and Synod building on the square.
At the center of the square stands the Monument to Peter I, known as the Bronze Horseman, a prominent symbol of Saint Petersburg. Unveiled on August 18, 1782, the monument led to the square being briefly renamed Petrovskaya Square. From 1925 to 2008, it was called Decembrists’ Square. Senate Square is a popular tourist destination, surrounded by notable landmarks such as Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, Palace Square, the Hermitage Museum, the Winter Palace, and other Saint Petersburg attractions.
