Lomonosov is a small town within the Petrodvortsovy District of Saint Petersburg, located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland at the mouth of the Karasta River, about 52 kilometers (32 miles) west of downtown Saint Petersburg. The town was founded in 1710 as the country residence of Alexander Menshikov and was granted city status in 1780. Originally named Oranienbaum, meaning “orange tree” in German, the town received its current name on February 28, 1948, in honor of the Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov.
The city covers an area of 35 square kilometers and has a population of about 43,000 residents. Its main attraction is the Oranienbaum Palace and Park Ensemble, a magnificent 18th-century complex of palaces and landscaped gardens. This live webcam, provided by the internet service provider SatNet and installed at 32B Aleksandrovskaya Street, overlooks the “Lion at the Orange Tree” Fountain, built to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the city. The fountain features a large bowl with a diameter of 14.2 meters (46.6 ft), with a 5.8-meter-tall (19 ft) bronze sculpture at its center — a lion reaching toward an orange tree, symbolizing the historic name and heritage of Lomonosov.
