Troitsky Avenue is the city’s central and most important street, stretching from Union Square (Ploshchad Profsoyuzov) in the south to Gagarin Street in the north, following the curve of the Northern Dvina River. Throughout its history, the avenue has played a key role in Arkhangelsk’s life, serving as its administrative, cultural, and transportation hub. The city’s main street is also famous for its architecture and many landmarks.
The avenue is named after the former Trinity Cathedral, which once stood near the site of today’s M.V. Lomonosov Drama Theater. The cathedral was built in the late 18th century, consecrated in 1805, and demolished in 1929 during the Soviet era. In earlier times, different parts of the street had different names: the northern section was called Nobility Avenue, the southern part Merchant Avenue, and even earlier it was known as Middle Avenue. From 1920 to 1993, the street was officially named after Pavlin Vinogradov, a participant in the Russian Civil War in the North.
Troitsky Avenue is home to numerous cultural and historical landmarks. Among them are the Sura Metochion of the St. John the Theologian Monastery (No. 1, built in 1906–1907), the House of Merchant I.S. Ulyanovsky (No. 14, 1910), the Obelisk of the North monument, the Monument to Pavlin Vinogradov, the City Estate of V.P. Karpov (No. 58, 1830s), the Cathedral House (No. 60, 1825), the House of S.D. Lemyakhov (No. 62), the House of N.O. Sharvin (No. 91), and the State Wine Warehouses (Nos. 133 and 135, built between 1899 and 1905). The avenue also features key cultural institutions such as the Arkhangelsk Drama Theater and the Arkhangelsk Puppet Theater.
