Palmaria Island is a small island in the Ligurian Sea, located at the entrance to the Gulf of La Spezia and the Portovenere promontory, separated by a narrow strait. The island covers an area of 1.53 square kilometers (0.59 square miles) and features an old fort, several hotels, vineyards, and olive groves.
Palmaria Island boasts grottoes, picturesque cliffs, coves, and beaches, with the most beautiful and well-known being Punta Secco Beach (Spiaggia Punta Secco) and Prison Beach (Spiaggia delle Carceri). Palmaria Island, together with the Portovenere promontory, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town of Portovenere is part of the province of La Spezia in the Liguria region and is located on the namesake promontory, 13 kilometers (8 miles) south of the city of La Spezia.
