The Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi is one of the most significant churches in Italy, a pilgrimage site, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The basilica was founded in 1228 by order of Pope Gregory IX, shortly after the canonization of Saint Francis, and was consecrated in 1253. The complex consists of two levels: the Lower Basilica (Basilica Inferiore) and the Upper Basilica (Basilica Superiore). The Lower Basilica is built in a Romanesque style and is intended for prayer and meditation, creating a dark and quiet space. The Upper Basilica, in contrast, is built in a Gothic style, with high windows and vaults that allow natural light to enter, creating an atmosphere of spiritual elevation.
