Independence Square in Kiev is the main square of the capital of Ukraine. It is located in Shevchenko district of the city, between Khreshchatik Street, Boris Grinchenko Street, Sofiyevskaya Street, Malaya Zhitomirskaya Street, Mikhailovskaya Street, Kostelna Street, Institutskaya Street, Architect Horodetskyi Street and Taras Shevchenko Lane. It has a lot of sights of Kiev, such as Independence Monument, Hotel Ukraine, The October Palace, The House of the Unions, Kiev Main Post Office, the Lyadski Gates and National Music Academy of Ukraine named after P.I. Tchaikovsky. The square was formed in the 1830s and was named Khreshchatytska, after the street on which it was located. Since then, the square has been renamed several times and is now called Maidan Square (Independence Square), named after the proclamation of independence of Ukraine in 1991.
