Favignana is the only town and seaport on the some name island, which is the largest in the Egadi Islands archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, located off the western coast of Sicily. The town is situated in the central part of the island and serves as its administrative and cultural center. The island is 7 kilometers (approximately 4.3 miles) from the western coast of Sicily and covers an area of 20 square kilometers (about 7.7 square miles).

Due to its unique shape resembling a butterfly, Favignana Island is often referred to as the “Butterfly of the Mediterranean.” Favignana has been known since ancient times for its tuna fishing. The traditional method of tuna fishing, called “mattanza,” is still practiced here every year. In recent decades, the island has become a popular tourist destination thanks to its picturesque beaches, clear waters, and rich history.
