The live webcam provides a real-time view of Mount Etna from the city of Catania, Italy.
Catania is the second-largest city in Sicily after Palermo, a major seaport, and the administrative center of the province of Catania within the Sicily region. The city has a population of over 294,000 people and covers an area of 181 square kilometers (about 70 square miles). Catania is situated on the eastern coast of the island of Sicily at the southeastern base of Mount Etna. Founded in 729 BC by Greek settlers from the city of Chalcis on the island of Euboea, Catania has a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, sunny weather. It is one of the sunniest cities in Italy, receiving about 2,528 hours of sunshine annually.
The city has experienced several major earthquakes and has been covered by volcanic ash from eruptions of Mount Etna, leading to multiple reconstructions. Despite this, Catania retains a wealth of historical and architectural landmarks. Notable sites include: the Cathedral of Saint Agatha, the Ursino Castle built in the 12th century by Emperor Frederick II, the Benedictine Monastery, the ancient Roman Theatre built in the 2nd century AD, the Church of San Nicolò l’Arena, the Triumph Arch of Porta Giuseppe Garibaldi, Villa Bellini Park, the Catania Botanical Garden, and more. The popular sandy beach Lido Azzurro, located in the city center near the Catania seaport, is also a favorite among tourists.
