Piazza del Comune is the central and one of the most famous squares in the town of Assisi, located in the Umbria region of central Italy. The square is surrounded by historic buildings that reflect the rich architectural and cultural heritage of the town. For centuries, it has been the heart of Assisi’s urban life.
Piazza del Comune was developed around the ancient Roman forum. The centerpiece of the square is the Temple of Minerva (Tempio di Minerva), built in the 1st century BC and dedicated to the goddess Minerva. In the Middle Ages, the temple was converted into the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, but its façade remained largely intact, making it one of the best-preserved Roman temples in Italy.
On the northern side of the square is the Palazzo dei Priori, a 13th-century Gothic-style palace that once served as the residence of the town’s rulers. Today, it houses the Assisi municipal government. Other notable landmarks around the square include the 13th-century Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the Torre del Popolo, a tower built in 1305. The square is also home to cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it a popular spot for gatherings and strolls.
Piazza del Comune is located in the heart of Assisi, which itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town is situated approximately 20 km (12 miles) southeast of Perugia and 150 km (93 miles) north of Rome. Assisi is easily accessible by car, train, or bus. Piazza del Comune serves as an important starting point for tourist routes through Assisi. It attracts visitors not only with its architecture but also with its picturesque views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
