Cefalù Cathedral is one of the main attractions of the town of Cefalù and a prominent example of the Arab-Norman architectural style from the 12th and 13th centuries on the island of Sicily. The cathedral has preserved its architectural integrity from those centuries and features famous 12th-century Byzantine mosaics. On July 3, 2015, the cathedral was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral was commissioned by Roger II, the first king of the Kingdom of Sicily, who, during the summer of 1131, encountered a fierce storm and vowed to build a church in the name of the Savior at the site where his ship would land. On August 6, 1131, the Feast of the Transfiguration, Roger II reached the Sicilian shore at Cefalù.
