The Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran (Italian: Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano), is the cathedral of Rome and the seat of the Bishop of Rome, carrying the title Basilica major. It is one of the most significant religious structures in Rome, the capital of Italy.

The basilica was founded in 324 AD by Emperor Constantine the Great and is considered the first public Christian church in Rome. Above the entrance to the basilica is the inscription, ‘Most Holy Lateran Church, of all the churches in the city and the world, the mother and head,’ indicating that this is the principal basilica of Rome.

Throughout its history, the basilica has been repeatedly rebuilt and restored due to earthquakes, fires, and other destructions. The facade, completed by Alessandro Galilei in 1735, is an outstanding example of Baroque architecture. Inside, the basilica is adorned with mosaics, frescoes, and statues. Notably, the statues of the twelve apostles, created by various renowned sculptors of the 18th century, deserve special attention.
