Teatro Massimo is the largest opera house in Italy and one of the most majestic in Europe. Located in the heart of Palermo on Piazza Verdi, it stands as an architectural masterpiece and a cultural icon of Sicily. The theater was designed by the renowned architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile, with construction beginning on January 12, 1874. After Basile’s death in 1891, his son Ernesto Basile took over the project and completed it. Teatro Massimo opened its doors on May 16, 1897, with a performance of Verdi’s Falstaff.

The theater’s architecture is a stunning example of Neoclassical style with elements inspired by Greek temples. The auditorium, designed in a late Renaissance style, is horseshoe-shaped and features multiple tiers of boxes, accommodating over 3,000 spectators. The auditorium is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, and its ceiling is adorned with a “Symbolic Wheel” with eleven petals, which were part of an innovative cooling system. Today, Teatro Massimo is one of the most famous landmarks not only in Palermo but also in all of Sicily.
