Piraeus is a port city the Athens urban area (“Greater Athens”) in the Attica region of Greece. It is located in the Saronic Gulf of the Aegean coast, 9 km southwest of the city center of Athens. The area of the city is 50.4 km2 (19.4 sq mi) and has a population of 448,997. It is one the oldest city of the country and was founded in the early 5th century BC as the new port of Athens. Today, Piraeus Port is the largest port in Greece after Thessaloniki and one of the largest in Europe. It is also the busiest ports in Europe by container traffic and the busiest container port in the Eastern Mediterranean. Piraeus is one the best cruise destination in Greece and the port was awarded “Best Cruise Port in the Eastern Mediterranean Region” from MedCruise in 2019. Piraeus has a hot semi-arid climate and is the only area in Greece with this type of climate.
