Piazza Unità d’Italia is the main square of Trieste, recognized as the largest square in Europe that directly opens onto the sea. Situated in the heart of Trieste, at the foot of San Giusto Hill and close to the city’s port, it has long served as the central hub of the city’s urban life. Originally named Piazza Grande, the square is surrounded by several historic buildings and palaces, including Palazzo del Municipio (Town Hall), Palazzo del Governo, and Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino.

One of the iconic landmarks of Piazza Unità d’Italia is the Fountain of the Four Continents (Fontana dei Quattro Continenti), designed in 1751 by Venetian sculptor Giovanni Battista Mazzoleni. The fountain is adorned with allegorical statues representing the four known continents of the time—Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. Each figure is accompanied by symbols reflecting the characteristics of the respective continents: Asia is symbolized by a camel, Africa by a lion, Europe by a horse, and America by a crocodile. This fountain illustrates Trieste’s historical role as a crossroads of various cultures and its significance in global trade during the 18th century. The architectural and historical significance of Piazza Unità d’Italia makes it a must-see destination for visitors to Trieste.
