Hahnenkamm (German for “rooster’s comb”) is a prominent peak in the Austrian Alps, located southwest of the town of Kitzbühel in the federal state of Tyrol, western Austria. More than just a picturesque landmark, it is one of the most famous ski destinations in the world, attracting thousands of tourists and professional athletes each year. The mountain reaches an elevation of 1,712 meters (5,617 feet) above sea level. It is part of the Kitzbühel Alps and belongs to the Kitzbühel ski region—one of Austria’s oldest and most prestigious ski resorts.
Each January, Hahnenkamm hosts the prestigious Hahnenkammrennen ski race, a key event on the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup calendar. The highlight of the event is the legendary downhill race on the Streif course, widely considered one of the most difficult and dangerous ski runs in the world. During the warmer months, Hahnenkamm transforms into a popular destination for hiking and mountain biking. The Streif-Wanderweg hiking trail allows visitors to walk along the legendary downhill route, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding Alps.
The Kitzbühel ski resort offers a wide range of slopes for all skill levels—from beginners to seasoned professionals. The ski area features a total of 233 kilometers (145 miles) of slopes, served by 58 modern ski lifts. Access to the summit of Hahnenkamm is provided by the Hahnenkammbahn cable car, which departs from the center of Kitzbühel. The resort also boasts a wide selection of restaurants, cafés, and accommodations—from cozy family-run guesthouses to luxurious five-star hotels.
