Oostduinkerke-Bad is a seaside district in the municipality of Koksijde, located on the North Sea coast in the province of West Flanders, in the southwestern part of Belgium. The district lies between the cities of Ostend and De Panne. Formerly an independent municipality, Oostduinkerke became part of Koksijde in 1977. As of 2021, Oostduinkerke-Bad has a population of approximately 8,500 people and covers an area of around 2.4 square kilometers (about 0.93 square miles).
With the growth of coastal tourism in the 19th century, Oostduinkerke-Bad developed into a popular seaside resort. Between 1876 and 1878, a road was constructed connecting the village of Oostduinkerke to the sea—originally called Zeelaan (now Leopold II-laan)—which helped spur the area’s development. The first hotel opened in 1895, followed by Hôtel Saumon (“Hotel Salmon”) in 1900. Since then, Oostduinkerke-Bad has continued to thrive as a tourist destination, while preserving its traditional fishing village charm.
Key attractions in the area include the National Fisheries Museum, the Oosteroever Lighthouse, and the wide sandy beaches of Oostduinkerke-Bad, which stretch for several kilometers (a few miles) and are popular for sunbathing, swimming, and various water sports. The district is also known for its extensive dune landscapes, which are part of a protected nature reserve. Most notably, Oostduinkerke-Bad is internationally recognized for its unique tradition of shrimp fishing on horseback, a cultural practice that has been inscribed by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
