Kortrijk is one of the oldest cities in the Flanders region of western Belgium. It is situated along the banks of the River Leie (also known as the Lys), in the province of West Flanders. The city lies at the confluence of the Leie River and the Leie–Scheldt Canal, near the French border, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Brussels. Kortrijk covers an area of 80.02 square kilometers (30.90 square miles) and has a population of around 77,000 residents.

Kortrijk is known for its rich historical roots and attracts visitors with its architectural landmarks, cultural events, and thriving economy. The city is a major textile hub in Flanders and plays a key role in the region’s economic development. Its history dates back to the Roman era, when it was known as Cortoriacum. Over time, it became an important commercial center during the Middle Ages due to its strategic location on the trade route between Belgium and France.

The city is particularly famous for its textile heritage. Since the 18th century, Kortrijk has been recognized as a center of the flax and linen industry. The textile sector has played a vital role in the city’s economic growth and continues to be an essential part of its identity.

Notable attractions in Kortrijk include the Broel Towers (Broeltorens), built in the 13th and 14th centuries; the historic Kortrijk City Hall (Stadhuis van Kortrijk), constructed in the 16th century in Gothic style; St. Martin’s Church (Sint-Maartenskerk), dating back to the 9th century; the Broel Museum; St. Roch’s Church; and the Kortrijk Beguinage (Begijnhof Kortrijk), which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also well known for its many restaurants and cafés, offering a variety of traditional Belgian cuisine.

Kortrijk has a moderately humid climate with mild winters and cool summers. The city receives a significant amount of rainfall throughout the year, particularly from May to September. In winter, average temperatures rarely drop below 0°C (32°F), thanks to the city’s proximity to the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean.
