Schwäbisch Gmünd is a city in the state of Baden-Württemberg in the southwestern Germany, located at the foot of the Swabian Alb Mountain Range. It was founded in the middle of the 12th century, presumably by King Conrad III. From 1268 to 1803 Schwäbisch Gmünd had the status of a free imperial city. In its heyday, the city was the center of jewelry masters, and it was here that the technique of silver plating of glass and porcelain was invented. Today, Schwäbisch Gmünd is a developed industrial city, with many companies in the pharmaceutical, glass, mechanical engineering and toiletries industries.
