Oudenaarde is a picturesque city in the Flemish province of East Flanders, located in the northwest of Belgium. It sits along the banks of the River Scheldt, approximately 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of Ghent, 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of Antwerp, and 89 kilometers (55 miles) west of Brussels, the capital of Belgium. The city was founded in 974 AD by decree of Otto II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, as a fortress on the Scheldt River to protect the region from attacks by the Kingdom of the Franks (modern-day France).
