Tarragona is a city and the administrative center of the province of the same name in the autonomous community of Catalonia in northeastern Spain. It is located on the Mediterranean coast, 98 km (61 miles) southwest of Barcelona. The city has a population of about 140,000 people and covers an area of 61.91 km² (23.91 square miles).
Tarragona is an ancient city with a rich history dating back to the Roman Empire when it was called Tarraco and served as the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis. The city has preserved many historical and architectural monuments, and you can see a large number of Roman ruins, which has earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
