Trieste is a city, a major seaport, and the capital of the province of the same name in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy. It is located on the southeastern shore of the Gulf of Trieste, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea, approximately 145 kilometers (90 miles) east of Venice and near the border with Slovenia. Trieste is the 15th largest city in Italy, with a population of around 200,000 people.
As one of Italy’s oldest cities, Trieste was mentioned by Julius Caesar in his “Commentaries on the Gallic War” as the settlement of Tergestum. During the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus, the first city walls were constructed, and a harbor was established. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Trieste declined and became a small fishing village. Today, it is Italy’s largest and one of Europe’s largest seaports, as well as a significant industrial, scientific, educational, and tourist center.
The city is renowned for its historic architecture and monuments, showcasing styles such as neoclassicism, art nouveau, and baroque. Major attractions in Trieste include Miramare Castle, San Giusto Castle, the Roman Theater, the Basilica of San Giusto, the Basilica of Saint Sylvester, the Church of Saint Spyridon, the Cathedral of San Giusto, the Grand Canal, the Arch of Riccardo, and more. The climate here is Mediterranean, with very warm, sunny summers and mild, foggy winters.
