Piazza del Popolo is one of popular squares in Rome which received its modern appearance thanks to architect Giuseppe Valadier during Napoleon’s time. In its center stands an obelisk 24 meters (79 feet) high with intricate bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the reign of the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II. It was brought here from ancient Egypt in 10 BC by order of Emperor Caesar Augustus. Around the obelisk is a fountain adorned with lions made of white marble. The square is home to the famous church of Santa Maria del Popolo, built in the 11th century, and the twin churches Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto.
