The Sagrada Família (Spanish: Basílica de la Sagrada Família) is an iconic basilica and one of the main attractions in Barcelona, the capital and largest city of Catalonia in Spain. The basilica is renowned for its unique and intricate architecture and design. Construction began in 1882 based on the project of architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, and in 1883, the legendary Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí took over the project, significantly altering the original design. The completion of the basilica is planned for 2026, marking the centenary of Gaudí’s death.

The architectural appearance of the Sagrada Família is characterized by three grand facades: the Nativity, Passion, and Glory facades. Each facade tells a different part of the story of Jesus Christ. The central nave reaches a height of 45 meters, while the tallest of the eighteen planned towers will reach 172.5 meters. Inside, the basilica resembles a forest with tall columns branching out like trees. This effect is enhanced by the use of natural light filtered through colorful stained glass windows, creating a kaleidoscope of colors within the basilica.

Over more than a hundred years, the construction of the Sagrada Família has faced numerous challenges, including the Spanish Civil War and funding issues. Today, construction continues using the most modern technologies to realize Antoni Gaudí’s vision. However, many tasks are still performed by hand, adhering to traditional building methods.

Nowadays, the Sagrada Família is one of the most famous landmarks in Barcelona, attracting millions of tourists from around the world each year with its captivating and unique architecture and the deep symbolism embedded in every detail of its facades and design. Visitors can explore the intricate facades of the basilica, its impressive interior, and even ascend the towers to enjoy panoramic views of Barcelona.
