Kavala is a city and the capital of Kavala regional unit located on the coast of the Kavala Bay of the Aegean Sea in the north of Greece Mainland, 153 km (99 miles) east of Thessaloniki. The area of the city is 112.6 km ², it is home to about 59 220 people. It was founded in the late 7th century BC by settlers from Thassos and Paros, it was named Neapolis, from the Greek ‘new city’. The Fortress of Kavala located at the peak of the Old Town and is the most stunning sights of the city. It was built in the first quarter of the 15th century AD on the places of the Byzantine Acropolis of Christoupolis. The fortress was being completed in different periods by the Byzantines, Venetians and Turks, from 1371 to 1912 Kavala was the part of the Ottoman Empire. Today, Kavala is the second largest city and the principal seaport of eastern Macedonia. It is a strategically important port in the north of Greece.
