Athens International Airport, Greek: Διεθνής Αερολιμένας Αθηνών «Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος» (IATA: ATH, ICAO: LGAV), is the main international airport of Athens and the largest airport in Greece. It was opened on March 28, 2001 and is named after the Greek politician Elefthérios Venizélos, who made a significant contribution to the development of Greek aviation and the Hellenic Air Force in the 1930s. It is located 17 km southeast of the city center of Athens and 25 km southeast of the old airport of the capital of Greece. The airport handles above 20 million passengers a year and is a hub for Greek airlines such as Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air.
