Chania is a port city and the capital of the Chania regional unit in Greece. It is located on the north west coast of the Crete island, 70 km (43 mi) west of Rimnon and 145 km (90 mi) west of Heraklion. The area of the city is 12.5 km², and its a population is about 108,642. Chania is the second largest city of Crete after Heraklion. Until 1971, Chania was the capital of the Crete, today, the capital of the island is Heraklion. Chania includes the Old Town and the modern city named Nea Hora (meaning “New Town”), which located to the west of the Old Town. The Old Town is located next to the old harbor and has many historical sights. The Lighthouse of Chania is the main attraction and the symbol of Chania, which is of the oldest lighthouses in the world. The other sights of the town include: Maritime Museum of Crete, Archaeological Museum of Chania, Venizelos Graves, Firkas Fortress, Church of Agios Nikolaos, Cathedral of Eisodion tis Theotokou and more.
