Astypalea is a Greek island in the Dodecanese archipelago located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, 36 km southeast of the island of Amorgos. The area of the island is 96.8 km², its length is 18 km, and width is 13 km. The island consists of two parts connected by an isthmus only 130 m wide at the narrowest point. Astypalaia Island National Airport (IATA: JTY, ICAO: LGPL) is located on the isthmus between two parts of the island, approximately 12 km northeast of the town of Astypalaia. Astypalaia Town, or Chora, is the capital of the island and one of the most beautiful Chora in Greece. It is located on the southwestern coast of the island, around the small bay on the Aegean Sea. The Castle of Astypalaea is the most popular sight of the entire island, it is located on the top of the castle hill in the heart of the Old Town. The Venetian Castle was founded by Giovanni Querini at the position of the ancient Acropolis in a 14th-15th century.
