The Pantheon is a temple dedicated to all Roman gods and is one of the best-preserved architectural monuments of Ancient Rome. It is located on the Piazza della Rotonda in the historic center of Rome. The Pantheon was built during Emperor Hadrian’s reign between AD 118 and 125 on the site of an earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa in 27-25 BC. The word “Pantheon” is derived from Greek, meaning “temple of all gods.” Originally constructed as a temple for all Roman gods, it now serves as a Christian church known as the Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs.

The Pantheon is unique among other architectural monuments of Ancient Rome in terms of its composition and architecture. The structure features a large portico with sixteen Corinthian columns made of Egyptian granite, leading to a rotunda with a massive dome. The Pantheon’s dome remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, with an internal diameter and height of 43.3 meters (142 feet). At the center of the dome is an oculus, a 9-meter (30-foot) wide opening that allows natural light to illuminate the interior space.

The Pantheon bears the inscription “M. AGRIPPA L F COS TERTIUM FECIT,” which translates to: “Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, elected consul for the third time, built this.” Today, it remains an active church and one of Rome’s main tourist attractions, drawing visitors from around the globe. Through this webcam, you can also see the fountain and the obelisk of Ramses II located in front of the Pantheon.
