Pietrasanta is a small town located in the province of Lucca in the Tuscany region of Italy, nestled at the foot of the Apuan Alps. It lies 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from the Ligurian Sea coastline and 135 kilometers (83.9 miles) southeast of Genoa. The town covers an area of 22.994 square kilometers (8.88 square miles) and is home to approximately 24,000 residents. Pietrasanta is renowned for its beautiful marble, famously appreciated by Michelangelo, and for the numerous sculptures that adorn the town. It is often referred to as the ‘City of Sculptures and Sculptors,’ and it attracts architects and designers from around the world who seek inspiration.

Cathedral Square (Piazza Duomo) is the main and central square of Pietrasanta, situated in the heart of the town. It features the Duomo di Pietrasanta, a cathedral that stands as one of the town’s key landmarks. The first mention of the cathedral dates back to 1223, and its façade is clad in pristine local marble, intricately carved with scenes from the life of Christ. In addition to the Duomo di Pietrasanta, Piazza Duomo is also home to a tall brick bell tower that rises 36 meters (118 feet) high. The bell tower was constructed in 1519, and local tradition suggests that the spiral staircase inside was designed by Michelangelo himself.
