Candelaria Square (Plaza de la Candelaria) is one of the most famous urban squares in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the two capitals of the Canary Islands in Spain. Located near the harbor in the historic center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it borders Plaza de España to the west, the city’s central square. It is one of the historic squares of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with its foundation rooted in the early development period of the city.

The square is named after the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands. At the center of the square stands the Monument to the Triumph of Candelaria (Triunfo de la Candelaria), also known as the Obelisk of La Candelaria. Carved from white Carrara marble, this obelisk was designed by Italian sculptor Antonio Canova and inaugurated in 1787, making it one of the city’s most famous and important monuments.

One of the main attractions of the square is the Carta Palace (Palacio de Carta), built in 1752 in Canarian Baroque style by Captain Matías Rodríguez Carta. Plaza de la Candelaria, with its array of restaurants and cafes, is a popular spot for relaxation. It is often used for public celebrations, parades, and festivals, especially during the annual Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the largest and most famous carnivals in the world.
